If given a choice to choose between Steve Bucknor and Darrell Hair (no, Mr Rudi Koertzen doesn't fit our bill) as your man to quit international umpiring with immediate effect, who would you choose? Don't say 'both'... And, don't even utter that 'it's like choosing between bad and worse.'
On one hand is a 61-year-old Jamaican, who's umpired in more Test matches than anyone else (122 Tests + 167 ODIs) and, on the the other, an Australian who, despite his controversial tenure, managed to stand in 76 Tests and 135 ODIs.
Quite visibly, 'Slow Death' Bucknor wins hands down when it comes to experience. However, public memory is short and, given the present mood amongst the cricket fans, it is likely that Hair would romp home with ease in terms of popularity (with zero votes from Pakistan, of course).
He's certainly won one battle after returning to umpiring. So, do you think that it's time for Bucknor to opt for six-month rehabilitation period? Or would you opt for Hair again?
Make up your mind, the voting lines are open!
i am sorry to say but both old men should quit international umpring. we should have simon taufel standing in every match
ReplyDeleteCome on, Taufel is just a kid in front of these experienced umpires. Just look at their stats. It takes time to gather experience. These guys are the best of the rest
ReplyDeletemy vote in favour of hair
ReplyDeleteI don't think that either of them knowingly or purposely make bad decisions. If you look back over all the games both of these men have umpired in they have made some outstanding decisions and some terrible ones as well. I mean no disrespect to either man but I have to agree with the first comment that both should retire. I would love to see some much younger umpires getting a go. I don't care what anybody says but as you age your eyesight, hearing and reflexes diminish. So does the standard of your umpiring. I would like to see players who are good at a Provincal or State level but not of a sufficient International standard of play being offered inducements to turn to umpiring. Then again in most sports where there are umpires or referees, there is always controversy.
